Duck Tales
Few things Loonie has to admit first:
1) Loonie love eating duck meat
2) Loonie ate this after spending two days on a kelong in Tanjung Pinang and feasting on lotsa and lotsa seafood.
It was a simple dish. A bowl of frangrant chicken rice with a roasted duck thigh, covered with thick, gooey gravy. What more can you ask for?
Well, what's so special about this plate of duck rice?
Let's start with the duck. What makes a piece of roasted duck meat delicious? It must retain the natural juices of the bird and it must not be too tough. The duck meat at this stall certainly passes the test! When Loonie took a bite into the meat, the juice (not the oil or fats) just oozed into his mouth and as Loonie started chewing on the piece of meat, the juice got mixed up with the meat and it was pure ecstasy. What gives this stall the edge over many other duck rice stalls is that the skin is crispy but not oily.
Next, the gravy. Many gravies are just dark sauces and are there for the sake of being there. I even overheard some hawkers say: "Add the gravy then the rice won't be dry mah..." But the gravy here is sweet and it accompanies the duck meat to a tee.
Lastly, the rice. Why the hell is chicken rice doing with roast duck, you might ask? Somehow that seems to a potent combination here. The rice is not as frangrant as your regular chicken rice (if it's for chicken rice, to be honest, sure fail) but put it together with the roast duck, voila!
Like Loonie said, simple dish but it certainly brightened me up after Loonie cleaned it up in less than 10 minutes. One word says it all: YUMMY!!!
